RATING OF THE ACTIVITY CANYONING MADEIRA

Why rate canyoning?

We offer sports activities such as canyoning, climbing and hiking at various levels of difficulty. To make it easier for you to choose, we have developed a clear scale for each activity so that you can see at a glance how challenging the individual activities are.
As our offers in Madeira differ greatly from one another, there is a separate scale for each sport. In canyoning, for example, the total duration plays a different role to that of a climbing course, as it is difficult to stop in the middle of a canyon descent. With climbing, on the other hand, you can take a break at any time after completing the route.
The higher an individual tour is rated, the more challenging it is. The activities and their ratings are difficult to compare with each other. A canyoning tour at level 3 sometimes has different requirements than a levada hike at the same level.
The total time always includes clothing and instruction.
In some cases, individual details contradict the classifications, for example the heights of the waterfalls. For example, if a canyoning tour only has a single high waterfall of 40 meters, and all other abseiling points are rather low, then it still receives a level 3 rating.

Look forward to an exciting canyoning tour in Madeira, whether in Seixal, Porto Moniz, Calheta, Funchal or Ribeira Brava!

Discovery tour

Casa Vento's taster tours are aimed at participants who want to discover the fascinating landscape of a gorge without learning much new. Your guide will tie you into the rope and take as many tasks off your hands as possible. You are, of course, allowed to walk and abseil on your own.
These tours are particularly suitable for very young guests and are also very reasonably priced thanks to a special family offer.

Example tours: Cales III, Porto Novo, Boieiros
Rating Canyoning Level 1
Level1

Beginners

Level 1 canyons are ideal for absolute beginners, the abseiling points are low, the approach is short and the water flow is equivalent to a light shower. The time spent in the canyon is such that an ascent is fun even with little athletic stamina.
These tours are also very suitable for young guests. Despite the easy level, you will celebrate some great learning successes, for example I will teach you how to abseil independently.

Example tours: Voltas, Cales I, Cidrao

Beginners Plus

Level 2 canyons are aimed at ambitious beginners who enjoy being outdoors and who are at least passively enthusiastic about canyoning and know that no boat is used in this sport. Abseiling down a waterfall feels like a powerful shower.
Participants should be at least twelve years old, know that they don't mind heights or have been involved in mountain sports before. In addition to abseiling, my guests learn how to belay.

Example tours: Faja das Eguas, Lajeado I

Advanced

Advanced tours are suitable for guests who already have previous canyoning experience or are familiar with rope work, for example through climbing. They should be familiar with walking in difficult terrain and water is their element, they also like hikes lasting several hours. Abseiling sections lead for a long time through cascading waterfalls.
Participants help with equipment handling such as pulling off and packing ropes.

Example tours: Camisa, Joao Gomes, Folhado

Advanced Plus

As a participant in a level 1 canyoning course, you are in good hands on this canyoning tour. But you are also welcome without a course if you have already visited several canyons. You don't mind heights and also feel comfortable in moving water.
Abseiling points may have an intermediate level or can only be reached via a rope railing. Independent handling of equipment and carabiners is therefore essential.

Example tours: Funda, Passo inf., Pedra Branca

Experts

You love moving through steep walls and abseiling down powerful waterfalls. Abseils of eighty meters or more will also make your heart beat faster. For an adventurous tour, you are also prepared to accept longer approaches with a fully packed rucksack. Welcome to our canyoning experts.
In places, you will have to tie yourself into the rope completely without supervision or dismantle belays or handrails.

Example tours: Agua Alto, Vimieiro, Lajeado II

Pro

Your passion knows no bounds, the level 2 canyoning course is in your portfolio and you want the ultimate experience. Free-hanging abseiling over 130 meters is your world and even ice-cold water doesn't scare you. Canyoning in Graubünden (Grison, Switzerland) is your true love.
You can actually go on a tour on your own, but the particularly unusual gorges simply require all participants to have the necessary expertise.

Example tours: Mega, Lajeado Integral
